Capital Campaign
Preliminary plans for the Aviation
Museum at Marietta, Georgia include permanent
and temporary exhibit galleries, a
100-seat theater, laboratories and
classrooms, meeting rooms, artifact
storage and care facilities, archives
and media center, and indoor
exhibit space large enough to
showcase a C-5 fuselage. Officially
licensed products and other merchandise
will be available for sale
in the museum store. Options for
on-site food service are being evaluated.
Many spaces in the 60,000
square foot facility and its outdoor
exhibit park will be available to rent
for private functions.
The museum will be located on 15.5 acres at the corner of New Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive in close proximity to the entrances of Lockheed Martin, Naval Air Station and Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Thanks to assistance from Lockheed Martin, the Air Force has leased the property to Cobb County who will sublease it to the Aviation Museum. The term of the lease is fifty years with the option to renew.
Museum property is a mere 1.5 miles from the Marietta Square and only 25 minutes from downtown Atlanta. Located just three miles from I-75, the museum will be a drawing influence for tourism and economic development.
Annually Georgia hosts approximately 50 million visitors who spend more than $25 billion during their stays thus making tourism the second largest industry in the state. According to the American Association of Museums, science and technology centers boast the second highest visitorship of all museums and average 180,000 visitors a year.
According to a recent study by the Cobb Convention & Visitors Bureau, out-of-town visitors spend an average of $170.68 per day on lodging, food, retail, attractions, and transportation. If the Aviation Museum draws 50,000 out-of-town visitors annually it will draw over $34,000,000 into the local economy through dollars spent during a typical stay.
